Signals and Copy Trading: How They Work and What Can Go Wrong
Copy trading mirrors another trader's positions on your account, while signals are trade suggestions you place yourself.

Copy trading automatically mirrors someone else's trades on your account
Copy trading means you link your trading account to another trader's account, and their trades are copied onto yours automatically. You choose how much of your own money follows each trade, and you can usually pause or stop the link at any time.
It is different from a signal service. With signals, someone sends you a suggestion, often through an app, a chat group or a Telegram channel, and you decide whether to place the trade yourself. Copy trading removes that manual step, but it does not remove the risk.
The appeal is obvious for anyone with a busy schedule. London runs from 16:00 to 01:00 PHT and New York from 20:00 to 05:00 PHT, so the busiest stretch of the forex day, the London and New York overlap from 20:00 to 01:00 PHT, falls right in the middle of Filipino evening hours.
| Part of the day | Local time · PHT |
|---|---|
| Busiest window | 20:00-01:00 PHT — London and New York open together |
| Thinnest stretch | 05:00-14:00 PHT — Sydney alone, wider spreads |
| European open | 16:00-01:00 PHT |
| US open | 20:00-05:00 PHT |
| Closed | Friday New York close until the Sydney open on Monday |
Hours are shown for the clocks in force today: London is on GMT until 28 March, New York is on EDT until 1 November. The Philippines does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.
Forex signals are suggestions, not guarantees
A forex signal usually includes a currency pair, a direction, and levels for entering and exiting. Some providers publish openly, some run paid groups, and quality varies enormously. A track record shown in a screenshot proves very little, because losing trades are easy to leave out.
Signals also arrive at different times. A signal sent during the Tokyo session, which runs from 08:00 to 17:00 PHT, may be stale by the time you see it if you are at work. Slippage between the suggested price and your actual fill is normal, especially around news releases.
If you follow signals, treat each one as information rather than instruction. You are the one holding the position, and you are the one whose money is on the line.
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| A fixed monthly return, promised in advance | Ask which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the SEC Philippines registry of capital market participants. |
| A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchers | Check the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers. |
| Someone offering to trade the account for you | Managing money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it. |
| A withdrawal released only after a new payment | Read the withdrawal terms you agreed to. A fee invented at payout time is not in them. |
None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at sec.gov.ph.
Copy trading apps make it easy to start, which cuts both ways
Most copy trading apps are built for phones, and funding usually runs through GCash, Maya, InstaPay, PESONet, bank transfer or card. That convenience means you can go from curiosity to a live position in minutes, often without reading anything carefully.
Before you copy anyone, look at how long they have traded, how deep their drawdowns have gone, and whether the results shown are verified or self-reported. A trader who is up over a month may still be down over a year.
You should also check how the app handles leverage, stop-outs and withdrawals. If those details are buried, that is a signal in itself. And if you cannot find the firm on the SEC Philippines list of registered entities at sec.gov.ph, that is worth pausing over.
| Platform | What it is | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|
| MetaTrader 4 | The older standard; expert advisors and a large script ecosystem | MetaQuotes |
| MetaTrader 5 | The newer build; more order types and timeframes | MetaQuotes |
| cTrader | Depth of market and a different order model | Spotware |
| The broker's own app | Usually simpler, and tied to that one firm | The broker |
A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. The licence question is answered on the register, not in the app store.
The real risks are concentration, leverage and people you cannot see
Copy trading concentrates your money in one person's decisions. If that trader takes a large position and it moves against them, your account moves with it. Diversifying across several traders reduces this, but it does not remove it, and it can also dilute any gains.
Leverage magnifies both directions. A small adverse move can wipe out a large share of an account, and stop-outs can close positions at the worst possible moment. Crypto copy trading carries the same structure with even sharper price swings.
There is also the human risk. A trader may change strategy, disappear, or turn out to be running a scheme rather than a track record. No app can verify intent, and past results never promise future ones.
| Figure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Indicative USD/PHP | 62.45 | open.er-api.com, pulled 2026-09-28 |
| How often it moves | Every trading day | — |
| The rate your account uses | Your broker's own conversion | The broker's rate card |
| Symbol on this site | ₱ | — |
An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. The gap between it and your broker's conversion is part of what a trade costs you.
Check the basics before you copy or subscribe
Start with the register. SEC Philippines publishes a list of registered entities at sec.gov.ph, and reading it takes a few minutes. If a name is not there, ask why before you send anything.
Then check the funding and withdrawal terms on the broker's own page, and confirm the payment route in your GCash or Maya app before you commit. Small test transactions are a reasonable habit.
Finally, decide in advance how much you are willing to lose, and treat that figure as spent. Copy trading and signals are tools, not shortcuts, and the person best placed to protect your money is you.
Ways money reaches an account in the Philippines

- Card payment — limits set by your card issuer and the broker
Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Confirm both in the provider's app and on the broker's funding page, and withdraw to the same account you paid from.
A signal tells you what someone else did, not what you should do next
A forex signal usually arrives after the trade has already been opened, which means the entry price you see is not the entry price you get. By the time a notification reaches your phone, the market has moved. Treat the message as context, not as an instruction to click.
Signals also carry no position size. The sender may hold a very different account balance, leverage setting and risk tolerance from yours. Copying the direction without copying the sizing produces a completely different outcome, and often a much larger one than intended.
That gap is where most beginner losses hide. Before acting on any signal, decide your own size, your own stop level and your own exit. If the signal does not fit that plan, the correct action is to skip it. No signal provider carries your risk for you.

A figure with no source and no date is a guess with good manners. Anything we could not trace is left out rather than printed from memory.
Copy trading keeps running when you stop watching, and that is the failure mode
Copy trading is continuous by design. Once you connect your account, the provider's trades are mirrored automatically, including while you sleep, work or travel. PHT is UTC+8, so many active forex sessions fall late at night or early morning in the Philippines.
The practical consequence is that a drawdown can build without you seeing it. There is no notification that says your copied positions have grown too large relative to your balance. The mirroring simply continues until you pause it or the account can no longer support the positions.
So decide your exit rule before you start, not during a bad week. Know exactly where in the app the pause and stop-copy controls sit. Test them once on a small live position so you are not learning the interface while a loss is widening.
| Document | What it proves |
|---|---|
| PhilID, UMID or passport | Who you are |
| Selfie with the ID document | That the document is in your hands |
Brokers usually also ask for proof of address; requirements differ per firm. The account-opening page of the broker lists what that firm accepts.
Record keeping matters more with copy trading than with ordinary trades
When you place your own trade, you know why you did it. With copy trading, the reasoning belongs to someone else, and months later the statement alone will not explain what happened. That makes your own notes the only reliable record.
Keep a simple log: what you copied, when you started, when you stopped, and what you observed. Screenshots of the provider's track record as it looked on the day you subscribed are worth keeping, because past performance displays change over time.
This record also helps if a dispute arises. SEC Philippines maintains a public registry of capital market participants at sec.gov.ph, and being able to show dates, amounts in PHP and the provider you dealt with makes any complaint or query far easier to pursue.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search the legal entity from the broker's own footer, not the brand.
Is copy trading the same as a forex signal?
No. Copy trading links your account to another trader's so their positions are mirrored automatically. A forex signal is a suggestion you receive and act on yourself. Copy trading is more hands-off, but you are still exposed to every decision the trader makes.
How do I check if a copy trading provider is registered in the Philippines?
Look for the firm on the SEC Philippines list of registered entities at sec.gov.ph. If it does not appear, ask the provider directly and keep records of what they tell you. The register is the source to trust, not a logo on an app.
Can I fund a copy trading account with GCash?
GCash is the main payment rail in the Philippines, and Maya, InstaPay, PESONet, bank transfer and card are also common. The exact options depend on the provider, so check the broker's funding page and confirm the route inside your GCash or Maya app before you send money.
Not sure where to start?
Read how funding works in the Philippines before you open an account. Five minutes, and it saves a lot of guesswork.
